People often think an electric kettle is only useful for those who drink a lot of tea, herbal teas and other infusions, which need near-boiling water.

The electric kettle is a household appliance that became popular in the middle of the last century, mainly in the UK and USA. It is still used today because it allows large quantities of water to be heated (or, indeed, boiled) very quickly, for example, for breakfast before heading out to work.

An electric kettle's primary function is just that: to heat water to the desired temperature in a very short time. Some models allow you to adjust the temperature to your liking.

In most cases, however, an electric kettle heats water to boiling point and uses the change from liquid to steam to trigger the automatic switch-off.

Electric kettles are becoming an increasingly popular appliance in Italian homes and kitchens. After all, they are very easy to use – just fill with cold water and switch on. There are many benefits:

  • energy saving: contrary to popular opinion, modern kettles consume very little electricity. Not only that, but when compared to the gas consumption of a stovetop kettle when heating an equal volume of water, the electricity cost of an electric kettle is negligible. Finally, as it switches itself off automatically, there is no risk of short circuits, and once the boiling point is reached, no more energy is consumed;
    time-saving – we've already mentioned it, but it's worth repeating it. An electric kettle boils water very quickly. Even if the water used to fill it is very cold, the new technologies used enable it to be heated in a very short time. A stovetop kettle, by comparison, is much slower. For those who are short on time, an electric kettle is an essential appliance;
  • space-saving: there are electric kettles of various sizes, shapes and colours, as well as those with additional functions. What they all have in common is their great practicality and the added convenience they bring to your kitchen by virtue of their lightweight and compact nature;
  • a kitchen aid: you shouldn't think that a kettle is only useful for making tea. For instance, many Italians now use them to pre-boil pasta water. Once again, saving energy and time, an electric kettle can be used to heat the water, which is then poured into a pan, salted and only then put on the gas. Gas usage will, therefore, be considerably less.
